This tribe has been a ghost town for the longest time. I believe it came about when Tribe began falling apart. So I created a Cincinnati Bellydance group on Facebook. If you have a Facebook account, please join us there. If your my friend on Facebook, you will most likely recieve an invite from me shortly. I'm sad Tribe and this tribe have fallen apart, but I want to stay connected, and right now, Facebook seems the place to be. If you are not a member of Facebook, you can always join and be apart of our group :)
PLAYSHOPS OFFERED BY BLISS BUTTERFLY

Beginning Bellydance: Study the ancient art of bellydance infused with
fresh breaths of modern style with Bliss! Learn to isolate body movements,
improve posture, increase body awareness, and dance with strength and
grace. A variety of music styles from traditional, electronica and hip hop
keep this class popping out of the box and locking it up.

Intermediate Bellydance: For dancers that have already studied bellydance
and are ready to refine skill and to discover ways to layer movements and
timing. Our warm up will begin with yoga and core strength training
exercises to advance our balance and poise. In this playshop we will pay
attention to detail of belly rolls and work on layering movements with
them. From there we will explore a wide range of shoulder possibilities
from slow and slinky to fast and tricky. Make your mind spin as we layer
movements and timing. Then we throw everything together and play with
combining slow movements with fast movements, levels and lots of laughter.
A short hafla and cool down will set the playshop to a close.

Fire Fan Bellydance: (All levels) In this playshop we will combine
bellydance with fire art dancing with fans. We will briefly discuss the
different types of fire fans, fuels and prop safety. Techniques for
spinning the fans as well as intricate formations combined with dance will
be explored as we refine ideas of presentation of the fire art in relation
to planes of the flames to the audience. Plan a workshop for your
bellydancing or fire art troupe and expand performance possibilities.

Fire Bellydance- (Intermediate) Learn to combine the movements of
bellydance with fire art. The possibilities of prop combination include
(but are not limited to) fans, palms, sword, poi, staff, double staff,
hoop or contact juggling. This class will begin with yoga to stretch and
condition the entire body, and to center into our movement and breath. We
will then drill several techniques of bellydance and learn a sequence of
dance to add our props to. Each prop is unique and will require a slight
difference of movement vocabulary, come prepared with the tools that you
feel most comfortable with so the focus can be on adding dance with your
favorite prop! We will end with a short cool down. Prior experience with
the prop of your choice is recommended for this playshop.

Double Staff Dance- (All levels) We will begin with a basic warm up
incorporating yoga postures, and an emphasis on wrist, elbow and shoulder
care. Then we will cover the concepts of beats, direction and timing to
gain orientation of our bodys' movements and the staffs' movements. We
will cover antispins, isolations, translations, newtons and some playful
dance to get you out of your head and into interacting with the audience
and your fellow flow artists. Let's dance! Some practice double staves
will be available, if you have them bring your own.

Ian Michael Smith~

I have been fire dancing for about eight years. Poi is my favorite and I
also spin staff, double staff, double whips, contact juggling, and ball
juggling. I currently perform with Vulcan Crew, Copper Lantern Fire
Theater, LumenAscent, Think13 and have recently started to work with Bliss
Butterfly. I am also a modern dancer. I have trained extensively in the
Axis Syllabus, and currently perform with Capacitor and Corpi Liquidi. I
was involved in founding the Spinagogue, and am currently involved in
creating Kindle, the first fire arts culture magazine.

PLAYSHOPS OFFERED BY IAN SMITH

Spin from the Hip (Int.)-This class is all about the pretty under-curve
that the wrist does when transitioning at the hip. We will examine
underutilized versions of moves you probably already know, like the 2-beat
weave, as well as some unusual turning techniques. Using the hip
transition can make the same pattern look completely different, and the
audience will notice the difference between the 3-beat and 5-beat weave.

Intermediate/Advanced Staff Spinning- This class will introduce off-center
grips and how they can be useful. The we will take a quick tour through
different ways to pass the staff from hand to hand, work on some pendulums
and non-linear planes and then learn technique that uses the body like a
lever to move the staff and how to use the momentum of the staff to
initiate body movement.

Intermediate Staff Dance- This Class will focus on interactions between
the staff and your body. We will do a quick overview of off-center
spinning then work with using the momentum of the staff to move your body
and visa versa. We will then work with aspects like quality and levels
and end with ways to utilize the hand that does not have the staff in it.

Poi Dance Techniques (All levels)- This class will focus on techniques and
drills I have found useful when learning to dance with poi. We will cover
pendulums, stalls, polyrhythum, turning, and hip transitions.

Beginning Contact Staff- This exiting class will introduce the building
blocks of contact staff allowing the staff to move around the body without
using the hands to grip. No experience is necessary, however basic staff
skills are recommended prior to taking this class. We will explore contact
points around the body, rolls vs. wraps, halos, movements necessary for
steves, and other useful contact moves that can be built upon for
intermediate and advanced contact staff.

PLAYSHOP OFFERED BY IAN AND BLISS

Partner Poi (Intermediate to Advanced)- The art of partner poi will add a
beautiful dynamic to performance while advancing skill level and
understanding of poi. This class will cover the basics of pendulums,
turns, timing and cues to discover ways of dancing around your partner
adding the necessary trust to advance in more difficult movements. Then
we will progress to intermediate partner poi moves of butterfly and tread
the needle gaining a greater understanding of planes. Finally explore more
advanced weave patterns and ways to interlock and transition between
different beat weaves and body orientation of you and your partner. All
participants should be able to do all these basic movements on their own
before attending this class. Please bring practice poi if you have them,
we will have some extra pairs to provide.
I refuse to eat at a chain restaurant when I'm sure there are some hidden gems up there. :-D

Thanks guys!

So, Amy Sigil of the prestigious Unmata in Cali is wanting to form a nationwide tour of bellydancers targeting local GLBT communites and its straight allies. I volunteered of course to help get the ball rolling here. It is a year away, and a date is way off as this in only in the brain storming stage. But it would kind of go like this.

All of this is going on in the GLOW Raqs tribe. If ya wanna join in on the fun, follow the linkage........

Anyone up for a low-key hafla at the Sorg Ballroom in Middletown on Friday, May 15th?

In addition to a small stage, great sound system, lots of room to dance - there is also a game room with pool tables, video games and tables to just hang out and have a small swap meet - work on costuming - plan future events - meet new people - and hey....if you're performing at Avasa's show on the 16th, you can even dry-run your piece!

I'll make it happen if there is enough interest - so post intent or PM me!

Likely entrance fee will be $5 per person...bring food to share and get in for $2.

Musicians are welcome!

I just got this today for my birthday but there is no way the hips are going to fit me. It still has the tags on it from the Bellydance Shop.
Bra band is up to 33.5"
Cups are 7x6 measured inside
Hips are 35.5"
It includes the bra, belt, arm cuffs and headband. (or you could make it into a choker)
I'm asking $199 which is what it cost so I can buy myself a birthday present that fits:)
If you are interested, I will also consider offers!
Thanks! Maali

This is a repost for Roma Boombox, and a cross post, but I thought you might enjoy hitting this night because of the wonderful Roma punk music and inherent boogey-abilty. You haven't partied 'til ya party like a Rom!

Roma Boombox says:
I just booked another night at the C & D in Northside (Cincinnati, Ohio). I will start DJing at 10 pm until 2 or 2:30 am.

NO COVER!!!!

I have my CD finished and i will bring a bunch with me, you can get one for $5.

The Festival of Lights

was a total disappointment this year. They now have all LED lights in the trees, and they suck! Most of the lights are white, but their not even white, they like a dull gray. They are not bright at all. Usually the zoo feels bright and festive, like it did wit the old lights, but with the new lights, its so dark and dreary. I think we were there an hour and 10 minutes and decided to leave. It was the one thing i looked forward to every year, but I will probably not be back.
From water jugs to swords, to effectively dance with objects on your head you must understand and maintain control over your center of gravity and shift it around your body freely and without restraint or hesitation. You must then become comfortable with the different balance points throughout the body and begin to use these points to explore isolation in a new way. Then you are ready to learn to move beneath, with, and around any prop used for balancing including basket, candle, cane, or sword.
...$30 for both days

~ INDIC IDIOM workshop: Bharatanatyam and Oriental Dance, when combined with respect, offer a new freedom and range in dance. The flowing musical movements of Oriental Dance, with its complete torso control, become the perfect complement to the ancient, exactly balanced science of Bharatanatyam, drawing its power from earthy feet and expressive eyes and hands. You will learn a break down of Bharatanatyam-inspired foot patterns, traveling steps, poses, hand gestures and head movements, then layer them with movements from oriental dance to create powerful and expressive combinations.
~ TURKISH DELIGHT workshop (taught over two days):
To explore dance as a Gypsy you must understand the unusual 9/8 rhythm, allow it to loosen your feet from the ground, and invoke a joyous Roma attitude. Explore cross steps, side steps, and back steps which let you make the most of your space and smoothly transition from one combination to another. Add delightfully Roma hand gestures and soft pelvic motions to your normal repertoire of shimmies and hip isolations to produce a joyful expression of dance.

Hotel room for Kira's Oasis this Friday & Saturday?

Hey everyone!

I'm performing at Kira's hafla this Friday night, attending Tarasita's workshop and then performing at the VIP show that night. Would anyone want to share a hotel room for Friday night? I'd rather not have to drive back and forth.

Also, does anyone have any blue Eye Kandy I can borrow? Or maybe point me in the direction of a Eye Kandy dealer here in Cincy? I want my eyes to be sparkley blue to match my sparkley blue costume for the VIP show. :) I've been looking around at eye shadows but nothing is as sparkley as Eye Kandy!!

Zahara is organizing a benefit event for Safiyyah, a dancer with Mystic Hips in Louisville. She has M. S. and a 4-month-old baby (a really tough combination) and mounting medical bills as a result. Artists contributing their performance include Mayan Ruins, Dante's Gypsy Circus, Al-Yanna Dancers, and many others. Make a $10 donation at the door, buy a Mayan Ruins Live CD, and bid on a performance by Dante's Gypsy Circus at a party of your own. It will be a great show with diverse artists from all over the area. See Zahara's MySpace page at http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=95387036&blogID=445278326 for more details.

Nov 1-2: Karim (Turbo Tabla) Nagi: Discounts for Teachers & early birds!

MEDSOK presents......KARIM (Turbo Tabla) NAGI
'Tradition Re-Imagined'
November 1 & 2, 2008
Clifton Center, Louisville KY

Workshop details, directions, and registration forms are at www.MEDSOK.org.

DISCOUNTS: We have Early Bird, Member and Teacher discounts this year.
1 - EARLY BIRD: Register by 10/15 to get a free pair of ‘canes’ for the Sat AM session.
2 - MEMBER: Join MEDSOK to get Member discounts or to dance in the Concert.
3 - MEMBER family: Spouse, parent, child or significant other may take the AM or the PM Saturday session for half-price.
4 - TEACHER: All teachers earn a discount of $10 per student if they register 3 or MORE students for the SATURDAY workshop. Teachers may apply their discount to their own or to student workshop fees.

KARIM SAYS: 'My teaching and performance transcend the distinctions. I regularly teach the Traditional, Old Guard and Cabaret schools, and I am also consistently invited to the major Tribal festivals. I am a native Egyptian, but am well acclimated to the American teaching style (highly verbal, and systematic with clear breakdowns, and I supply notes). I also teach at the university level. As a performer I have created pure tradition, as well as hybrid/fusion work. But don't let all the credential-stuff color your opinion: my classes are fun and funny. '

Our weekend with Karim is designed to appeal to women and men, dancers & musicians. And our new venue in the heart of the lively restaurant scene on Frankfort Ave boasts a theatre with a large stage, balcony, sound, lights and dressing room. It will be a wonderful weekend!

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 1st: Five hours of instruction. $60 members, $80 all others. Vending by Donna Carleton and Nashwa.

10:00 AM - 12:30 PM: TAHTEEB & ASSAYA (for men and women). Have more fun on stage! Dancing with sticks and canes is a quintessential expression in Egyptian village dance. Karim teaches a bold yet graceful unisex cane style that incorporates the male Tahteeb bravado & mock combat AND the Assaya flirtation and spunk. Karim teaches with the straight cane (we'll use dowels) and covers all the basic spins, flips and strikes, utilizing both hands for the entire lesson. Double cane is also taught, culminating in a short "friendly battle" choreography. Register by Oct 15 and we provide your (autographed) 'canes'!

2:00 - 4:30 PM: MUSICALITY FOR DANCERS (and musicians who play for dancers). This is a movement class that will help the dancer become the physical personification of Arabic music. Karim will demystify Arabic music by identifying and explaining several recurring themes, guiding students through several songs, and leading students in dancing to each theme. The class covers Taksim, Melodic themes, Vocal vs. instrumental songs, Rhythms & rhythm changes, Melodic modulation, Song structure, Orchestration & Instrumentation. Musicians will not need instruments for this class. They can consider it a lecture, so that they can learn what will make a dancer react, and how.

8:00 - 10:00 PM: DANCE CONCERT by MEDSOK dancers and featuring Karim Nagi, who will be treating us to one of his vibrant and energetic solo performances combining both dance and drumming. $5 members, $10 all others.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 2nd: Three hours of instruction. $35 members, $40 all others.
10:00 AM -1:00 PM: SAGAT & ZILLS (Dancers and percussionists, all skill levels). Karim promises to transform dancers into musicians with his distinctive and effective zill method utilizing drum techniques and an ambidextrous approach. The class includes dance combinations, solo patterns, musicality, and when-and-when-not to play within an Arabic song. Dance luminary Laurel Victoria Gray incorporated Karim's approach into her own curriculum, and Artemis repeatedly invites him back to teach at her Folk Tours Camp. This class will enlighten amateurs and inspire professionals.

LOCATION: The beautiful and historic Clifton Center at 2117 Payne St, Louisville KY, in the heart of the lively Frankfort Ave restaurant scene. Lots of parking.

WORKSHOPS: Doors open at 9 am both days. Vending on Saturday only. Some zills will be available for sale on Sunday.

CONCERT: Doors open at 7 PM. Concet at 8 PM. The Center theatre has a large stage, balcony, dressing room, lights and sound system. No videotaping w/o permission. No flash cameras. Dancers must be MEDSOK members and take the Saturday workshop to perform.

DISCOUNTS:

Looking for something to do tomorrow? I know the weekend is a busy one in terms of local dance events, but if anyone is still looking for something fun to do...

Tomorrow, Aida of San Francisco is joining us at Habeeba's Cincinnati for a day of workshops and an evening show.
Here's a link to the flyer and regiatration info:
www.habeebas.com/cincinnati/events.htm

And here's a link to Aida's website:
www.aidaofsanfrancisco.com/aida.html
Personally, I have to say that I'm very excited to hear Aida's take on the interplay between dancers and musicians, because she is well-versed in both middle eastern dance and music. Look at her website for her pedigree, it's impressive.
And I think we should make her sing :).

The show starts at 7:30 and will feature Habeeba's Dance Company, the Zaghareets, Dyani, Erica, Raks al Dounya, Azha, Jocinda, Ruric, the Oasis Flappers, Anaya Gypsy and many more. And as a side note, we're proud to introduce Anaya's student troupe, Eshne Dance! (Eshne means "little fire".)

Terry Morris, our local arts writer for the Dayton Daily News, a journalist trained in ballet by DCDC (that's pretty cool if you know anything about Dayton Ballet - who beat out NY and Houston several years running as best ballet company). Well... He did a really nice interview on Valizan, who's coming here this weekend. Turns out Terry was intrigued because of the journalist/dancer link...

About Valizan:
Valizan began his journey into Middle Eastern dance in 1995 when he joined The Society For Creative Anachronism, an educational group that learns about the Middle Ages by recreating it. Teachers Rayah Blackstar and Moria The Black instilled basic technique, while classes with the sublime Roula Said took him to a new plateau. Current influences include Yasmina Ramzy, Fat Chance Belly Dance, Jillina, Rachel Brice, Francisco Carranza and Aziz of Salt Lake City.

As one of few male belly dancers in North America, he has become a sought after solo performer and teacher across Canada and The U.S. for his powerful style and energy. He also heads up his own troupe, Shades Of Araby. Local appearances include Arabesque Dance Company's Asala, The International Belly Dance Conference Of Canada, Tribally Inspired, Northern Migration, The Dark Side, Face Zenna at the Royal Ontario Museum and The Bewitching Bellydance Ball. He also headlined In The Heat Of The Hafla in Milwaukee and appeared at Cabin Fever in Buffalo, NY.

He was recently honored to have been included in the 2007 Men Of Middle Eastern Dance Calendar put out by male belly dancer Jim Boz.

He began teaching American Tribal Style belly dance at Arabesque Academy in 2004, and became an apprentice in the Arabesque Dance Company in November 2005 when he began training in Egyptian Folklore with Yasmina Ramzy. He is honored to be a lead dancer in the Arabesque Dance Company Men's corps, and in the new project, The Righteous Rogues Of Raks.

Valizan also holds a degree from The Ryerson School Of Journalism.
The learning continues...
Deniz’s Original Annual Charity event is BACK!
10th Annual Belly Boo Bash will be on Saturday, October 4th, 2008 in the Historic Oregon District.
Come one, come all for a great cause. Tickets are only $15, and all proceeds go to the charity. This year’s charity is the Lakota Indian Nation. Many are living in sub-standard housing, with no heat, running water or electricity. Many children don’t have a winter coat. The sad thing is that this is going on right here in America. So let’s do something to help out and come in your most ghoulish gear and be prepared to scare.
If you are interested in dancing in the event, please call Deniz at 937-602-3788. Spots are limited so call her quick! In addition to the workshop earlier that day, Valizan will be performing that night. The event will be held at the new PlayThink Learning location at 411 E Fifth Street in the middle of the Historic Oregon Distric. There will be plenty of parking now that the city of Dayton is sending 1.3 mil to create more places for people to park. Show starts at 8:pm and will be done when we’ve squeezed all the fun we can out of the night. Open dancing, yummy treats, raffle items, plus anything else we can think up to make the night an exceptional evening to remember.
Visit www.caravanworkshops.com to learn more.

Free vending and performance opportunity!

Hey y'all - these don't come around very often, so I thought I'd post it for your consideration....

Free vending at Sorgfest in Middletown Ohio, Saturday July 19th! Sorgfest is looking for merchandise vendors (sorry, no food or beverage vendors) - there is no charge for vending space, but you will need to call and reserve your spot as soon as possible. POC is Tom: 937-580-7695.

Sorgfest is a single-day event from noon-midnight and will feature live music, XVW Wrestling exhibitions, a playground and various other activities, including a Guitar Hero tournament in the evening.

Also, if you want to dance - let ME know and I'll get you in! Times available for performing are between noon and 2 p.m. other than that, we'd have to squeeze you in between bands (and if you have a band that wants a slot, get a hold of me and I'll see what I can do!) and I can't guarantee you'll perform on-time. Performing is pro-bono - the festival organizers are not charging admission nor are they charging vending fees - they are simply trying to bring some attention to the good things they're doing in downtown Middletown by throwing a huge party.

Shimmies!
-Jennifer Rose (aka Fabala)

The Black Drum - "Rakshasa" Free Music Downloads!

"Rakshasa" was born out of a six-week break from touring with the crazy notion that there would be time enough for one person to write, rehearse, record, mix, master, and design art for a complete package. This personal challenge was met and became a reality despite so little time. Music from "Rakshasa" has been used in films, commercials, and for various choreographies created by dance troupes from around the country. In thanks to the amazing support that "Rakshasa" has received, I am gifting it to the community as a free download. The follow-up CD should be completed by November '08. Thanks to everyone for making "Rakshasa" such a positive learning experience!

It's time to give back the love! Pass the word around. :-)

Here's the link: http://legionofdoumbek.com/

p.s. If you like the drumming, feel free to visit my other project Teribus on the web. We will release our first CD on August 4th at the Pennsic War. You can listen to demos (work in progress) at http://www.myspace.com/teribusmusic

Ever feel as though your learning curve has reached a plateau? This workshop is a rousing motivational tool to enhance one’s personal practice. Mira will begin with a thorough breakdown of basic isolations and will gradually increase into multiple layering designed to bewilder the brain and electrify the body.

Sunday, July 6th- Liz Strong Workshop
TURKISH ROMAN FUSION:
form, and then fuse it to other dance elements. Turkish Rom dance is richly expressive and playful, passionate and fun.

Zoe Jakes- Zoe is a proud member of the indigo which recently was on the road touring their
show Le Serpent Rouge. She has been touring with Bellydance Superstars since
the fall of 2005 and can be seen performing on their new Tribal Fusions DVD.
Combining talents with David Satori and Tommy Cappel to create Tribal

Sun June 8: Delsarte for Dancers returns to Louisville!

Samovar Dance LLC presents:

Joe Williams RETURNS to teach the Delsarte System of Expression for Dancers!

Sun, June 8, 1:30 - 4:30 pm $35.00
Samovar Dance Studio at 300 Distillery Commons
Louisville 40206 (next to Headliners on Lexington Rd)

(Yes! We bring him back because we want to take a workshop from him again!)

What do Morocco of NYC (noted authority on Middle Eastern dance) and the Juillard School in NYC have in common? Both have Joe Williams on their faculty teaching the Delsarte system!

Delsarte gesture & movement principles add emotional depth to your technique & improvisation...improve communication with your audience...and identify movement patterns that are limiting the expressive use of your body. And Joe Williams is THE acknowledged expert on Delsarte!

This workshop will (re)introduce the basics of body language as revealed by Delsarte, describe straightforward but little-known techniques for communicating with your audience, and teach Delsarte exercises that establish the qualities of Beauty, Power and Presence in any dancer. This is a not-to-be-missed opportunity for Kentuckiana dancers of all disciplines and skill levels to come to grips with the challenge of dancing what they feel and feeling what they dance. If you are a dancer or a choreographer at any skill level you need to be here!

Joe got rave reviews from the attendees at the April workshop. This longer workshop will present new material as well as a refresher on the original stuff. It is hard to believe how informative this workshop is until you take it... and Joe has devised a structure which is lucidity itself. He doesn't leave students lost, bewildered or confused. There were dozens of a-ha! moments each hour. He truly is amazing.

$35 tuition includes admission to the Shake Your Tail Feathers party that will be held after the event. Joe will be vending a supplementary Practice Guide to students who wish to purchase one.

For directions, details, or to pay by PayPal:
www.Ruric-Amari.com (502) 777-7317

=========================================================================

"Joe Williams has single-handedly brought the wonderful principles and authentic teachings of real Delsarte back to life and to us. It's a necessary addition that improves any performing Art and Joe's clear, loving and gentle explanations make it so much easier for any student to grasp and employ for their betterment. He is simply inspiring." -- Morocco

Joe Williams has been successfully reviving interest in the Delsarte acting method with his workshops and seminars since 1997. Joe says: The Three Pillars approach teaches how body, mind, and spirit are not abstract principles but show themselves in every part of your body and every movement you make. Whether your style is Tribal, Fusion, Cabaret or Folkloric, you will see that all dance steps and gestures are various words from the alphabet of those three principals. Delsarte's principles of gesture are a powerful tool for developing body awareness for any number of ends.

The Delsarte method is the historically acknowledged source of the inspirations of Isadora Duncan, Ruth St. Dennis, and the entire Dennishawn School (including students Martha Graham and Doris Humphrey). Delsarte's work was praised by some of the greatest minds of the day, from scientists to religious scholars, musicians, and artists. Even renowned yogis mentioned it with the greatest respect. His system is a thorough examination of voice, breath, movement dynamics, line and form in their roles as expressive agents. Contemporary thought might recognize that he had uncovered the world of archetypes and universal symbolism. Unfortunately, the Delsarte system's popularity was its undoing in America. Within the span of twenty years it became a fad and then a frenzy, degenerated into a culture of studied posing, fell into disrepute, and disappeared... ...until Joe Williams decided to revive Delsarte's original system, that is. In the field of Delsarte for Middle Eastern Dance, he is now on the faculty of Morocco and the Casbah Dance Experience and has taught seminars and performed for BellyJam, Stars of the East, and Shakira in Columbus, Ohio. In 2005 he became a member of the faculty of the Dalcroze Institute at the Juilliard School in New York City, marking the first time in recent history that Delsarte has been taught as a valid and practical training method at a major school of fine arts.

Joe Williams, a resident of NYC, has been creating workshops and seminars on Delsarte since 1997. He is on the movement faculty for the Dalcroze Institute at Juilliard, and has been a guest teacher and Artist in Residence for Lori Belilove's Isadora Duncan Dance Foundation in New York. Williams has taught Master Classes for the Dance Department at Iowa State University, Wright State University, Ocean County Performing Arts Academy in NJ, Corporeal arts Inc. and at the Omaha Healing Arts Center. He has taken Delsarte to the Star Island Retreat Center for a week of dance, and used Delsarte to teach body language as a guest lecturer for communication classes at Mercy College, Bronx Community College and the School for Visual Art in Manhattan. An article in Mime Journal's 2005 special edition on Delsarte has brought him international recognition for his work in Delsarte and he has been consultant and teacher for the first scholarly thesis on the subject to be written in France, Francois Delsarte's homeland.

In the field of Middle Eastern Dance (MED) , he is on the faculty of Morocco and the Casbah Dance Experience, and has taught seminars and performed for Bellyjam, Stars of the East, Shakira in Columbus, Ohio, and special appearances with Su'ad and Farasha, in Connecticut, Vermont and New Jersey. Joe's work with Delsarte has been featured in articles in the MED publications WAMEDA (July-August 2000) and Zaghareet! (Sept - Oct 2000). His involvement in MED began in 1985 when Joe joined the Dayton Ethnic Dance Ensemble, which studied historically accurate Middle Eastern dance. In 1986 he began to work on the dance of the Whirling Dervish, which he has been performing consistently since 1994, most notably for the Institute of Ethnicity, Culture and the Modern Experience at Rutgers Universtity and the New School University Diversity Initiative in New York.

A teacher of dance, voice and yoga, Joe has a BA in organizational and interpersonal communications and a minor in theater from Wright State University, where he was the artistic director for the "Rolling Stock" theater group, helping to write and produce touring shows that presented the talents of differently-abled students. He was a scholarship student in ballet at the Dayton Ballet and Dayton Contemporary Dance schools (becoming assistant business manager of the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company for one year), and taught communication workshops for the Wright State School of Medicine for 6 years. His performing credentials include dinner theaters in the Midwest, where he danced and sang his way in numerous musicals including "George M", "Fiddler on the Roof," "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers," "Phantom," "Annie,"and several holiday reviews. He has also appeared as vocal soloist in oratorios with regional orchestras and with the Upper West Side Opera Association in Manhattan.

Dayton, OH 2008 Belly Boo & the super-spectacular Valizan October 4 & 5

Dayton, OH 2008 Belly Boo & the super-spectacular Valizan October 4 & 5

Mark your calendars!

Deniz did some soul searching, and checking to make sure there are no other local events happening that same weekend, she has decided to bring back her original Belly Boo fundraising event October 4th, 2008, along with our special guest , uber-super Valizan, teaching traditional FCBD ATS (beginning in the morning, advanced that afternoon). Sunday will be semi-private lessons in Tahtib - tell all your guys who love to dance!!! More details (location and registration) will be coming soon.

We missed her event last year since starting Belly Boo and Caravan of Hope back in the mid-90's. We're so glad she's back. ;-P I do know tickets to the show will be $15, and once all expenses are met (location rental, etc. - so any donations mean more $$ to the charity) all proceeds from Belly Boo will be going to the charity chosen. She is researching that right now, wanting the money to go to actual "good works" vs. administration (Anything over 10% administration starts getting shaky). Anyway - Suggestions welcome! As Ghandi said - "Be the change you wish to see."

Blessings,
VF

Zoe Jakes- Zoe is a proud member of the indigo which recently was on the road touring their
show Le Serpent Rouge. She has been touring with Bellydance Superstars since
the fall of 2005 and can be seen performing on their new Tribal Fusions DVD.
Combining talents with David Satori and Tommy Cappel to create Tribal
Derivations last spring, Zoe discovered she enjoyed creating music, and a new cd will be out may of 2008. When not with the Indigo, she tours with The Yard Dogs Road Show,
with the Extra Action Marching Band.
An innovative dancer, Zoe has been said to have her own unique take on Tribal

Liz Strong- Elizabeth Strong grew up in a tradition of dance and music. As a young girl she was inspired by the music and dancing of the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. Her amazingly emotional and personal style has captivated audiences in the Bay Area and abroad.
Camille and Terrie had the Cincinnati presence and was watched by a large audience, they had a great time slot Sunday afternoon, just 45 min prior to the full Blacksheep troupe!
Here's a front row video of them: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRGOMBCV7Dw
We have another coming from the official video row, and hope to post it soon!

Just wanted to post a reminder to save the date for the Raquy and the Cavemen hafla on August 16th. There will be a dance workshop taught by Melissa Lopez. We have yet book a solid location yet. We are hoping to have a venue large enough to have space available to vendors.
There are more details to come, I will keep you posted!
April 14: Delsarte for Dancers in Louisville KY

Monday, April 16, 6:30 - 8:30 PM:
Samovar Dance LLC presents:

Joe Williams and the Delsarte System of Expression, tailored for Dancers!

What do Morocco (noted authority on Mid-Eastern dance) and the Juilliard School in NYC have in common? Both have Joe Williams on their faculty teaching Delsarte!

Delsarte gesture & movement principles will
...add emotional depth to your technique & improvisation,
...improve communication with your audience,
...identify the movement patterns that are limiting the expressive use of your body.

The workshop will be a hybrid of two of Joe’s most popular seminars for dancers. ‘Body Language and the Dance’ introduces the basics of body language as revealed by Delsarte. ‘Expressive Zones of the Body’ is filled with "A-Ha!" moments as students recognize how accurate and applicable these forgotten truths are. Learn how changing the height of a gesture by a few inches, or changing the finger which is used to initiate a touch, can powerfully alter the meaning of that gesture.

Dancers and choreographers of all genres, persuasions and skill levels will enjoy this seminar. $25 tuition includes refreshments and a meet-and-greet with Joe after the event. The most recent edition of Joe's Delsarte Practice Guide will be available for purchase at the workshop.

Ruric's short workshop on improvisation last December got enthusiastic feedback from the attendees, and significant portions of that workshop incorporated Delsarte principles. If improvisation is one of your passions (or on your to-do list) then skip the take-out pizza that night and come instead to this unique and effective workshop!

The seminar is at Ruric-Amari's dance studio at
300 Distillery Commons,
Louisville KY 40206
(next to Headliners on Lexington Road)
Easy access from all major interstates.

================================
Joe lives in New York City, and has been creating workshops and seminars on Delsarte since 1997. He is on the movement faculty for the Dalcroze Institute at Juilliard, and has been a guest teacher and Artist in Residence for Lori Belilove’s Isadora Duncan Dance Foundation in New York. A article in Mime Journal's 2005 special edition on Delsarte has brought him international recognition for his work in Delsarte and he has been consultant and teacher for the first scholarly thesis on the subject to be written in France, Francois Delsarte’s homeland.

In the field of Middle Eastern Dance (MED) , he is on the faculty of Morocco and the Casbah Dance Experience, and has taught seminars and performed for Bellyjam, Stars of the East, Shakira in Columbus, Ohio, and special appearances with Su’ad and Farasha, in Connecticut, Vermont and New Jersey. Joe’s work with Delsarte has been featured in articles in the MED publications "WAMEDA" (July-August 2000) and "Zaghareet!" (Sept - Oct 2000).

His performing credentials include dinner theaters in the Midwest, where he danced and sang his way in numerous musicals including "George M", "Fiddler on the Roof," "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers," "Phantom," "Annie," and several holiday reviews. He has also appeared as vocal soloist in oratorios with regional orchestras and with the Upper West Side Opera Association in Manhattan.
Tangled Web Productions will be sponsoring our first "Carnival of Evil" show this year, and we're looking for performers. This year's theme is toys... but NOT your everyday pleasant ones! We're talking possessed and creepy toys... the kind that make you want to keep one eye open at night! There's a limited number of performance slots for this one-of-a-kind event, which will allow us to pay the performers.

Show details:
Tentative Name: Carnival of Evil 2008 - Draconia's Dreadful Playthings
When: Saturday, October 4, 2008
Time: Evening Performance (most likely starting at 8:00 PM and lasting 2.5 hours)
Additional Time Commitments: one mandatory informational meeting TBA (June or July) and one mandatory technical rehearsal TBA (could be earlier on the day of performance). Performers may also be required to participate in photo ops at the end of the performance.
Location: Covington, KY
Deadline for idea submittal: May 15, 2008
Submit ideas to: info@ZaharasTangledWeb.com

It's not necessary to submit an audition tape or to audition in person. However, you do need to share your idea and provide as much detail as possible for what you want to do in this show. The script will be developed around the acts that are selected.

IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO BELLYDANCE FOR THIS SHOW! If you like spinning poi, hooping, juggling, etc. and your idea is creative (or disturbing) enough, then you just might find yourself in the "toy chest"! Please keep in mind that we are not able to accommodate fire performers for this year's venue.

A word about compensation... it is our goal to make sure that the performers receive some money for their efforts. However, it is too early in the planning process to state exactly how much that will be. Ticket sales will greatly impact how much money is given to the performers!

Feel free to share this email with others inside and outside our dance community... and mark your calendars for the Carnival of Evil on October 4th!

Z

Hello, all you Lovely Dancers!

It's Jo Hadley w/ the Crescent Moon Dancers. Once again, the Crescent Moon Dancers are VERY proud to present Travis Fontaine Jarrell of Santa Fe, NM in a FABULOUS workshop on Sunday April 27th, 2008! Travis will utilize her extensive knowledge of many
different dance styles to show how fascinating gestures & movements from other cultures can be successfully incorporated into our own individual styles of Middle Eastern Dance. Whatever your style of dance is American Belly Dance, Raqs al Sharqi, Fusion, Interpretive, Gothic, Tribal, etc.), this workshop will have something for everyone! The cost is $40 before April 22, & $50 after April 22, & at the door. The fee includes the classes, our usual gourmet lunch, & the show! PLEASE don't order a show ticket for yourself, if you will be attending the workshop! We will be in a different location this year!!! We will be back at the Louisville School of Massage (where we were 4 years ago w/ Conchi & Nataj). As usual, everyone is welcome to dance in the informal show. Available slots will be filled on a first come-first served basis, so please let us know ASAP if you would like to perform! Our casual show is THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY for new dancers, new troupes, new choreographies, etc!!! If the following link doesn't work, please visit our website (www.crescentmoondancers.com), & click on "upcoming workshop."

Early warning: MEDSOK brings Karim Nagi to town Nov 1 & 2!

Karim Nagi, Mr. Turbo Tabla himself, is MEDSOK's 2008 workshop instructor. Karim Nagi's reputation as a master percussionist, dancer, teacher, performer and (as one U-Tube fan calls him ) 'party in a box' is growing fast. Karim has developed a comprehensive zill method that utilizes drum techniques and an ambidexterous approach and is a pioneer in the "Dancing Drummer" esthetic, combining choreographed movement with articulate drumming, done in unison. Laurel Victoria Gray (artistic director of Silk Road) updated her zill class technique in 2004 to reflect his system of developing ambidexterous skills . He teaches at Artemis's Folk Tour camp and he is a faculty member of the New England Conservatory of Music.

He says: 'I regularly teach the Traditional, Old Guard and Cabaret schools, and I am also consistently invited to the major Tribal festivals. I am a native Egyptian, but am well acclimated to the American teaching style (highly verbal, and systematic with clear breakdowns, and I supply notes). I also teach at the university level. As a performer I have created pure tradition as well as hybrid/fusion work. But don't let all the credential-stuff color your opinion. My classes are fun and funny. "

We haven't decided what dancing/music classes we'll ask him to do, but in case you want a preview:
A collage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63UAMaIqWgU
Zilling class: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6G5T_hWWrF4
Tambourine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGpIkItfPyc&feature=related
His re-imagined Stick dance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMBmbYMgFrw&feature=related
The possibilities: http://www.karimnagi.com/study/

MEDSOK members get a discount for the workshop and first dibs on any concert slots, so if you are thinking of attending and dancing, then think about joining! http://www.medsok.org/join_medsok.htm

Teribus, Navitas, and music classes

Teribus will be performing at the Center for World Rhythms and Movement on March 22nd. We have asked Navitas to dance to one of our tunes and they have agreed to do so! :-) We have added a couple of music classes to the program during the day including Celtic Music for Melodic Instruments and a Master Piping class for all skill levels.

We would like to encourage all belly dancers to attend as we load our tunes up with drums and percussion inspired by belly dance rhythms (malfuf, ayoub, etc.). :-) If you like darbuka, tupan, and bagpipes, here's your chance. :D

Oh...if you haven't heard the band, here's a link to an mp3: www.legionofdoumbek.com/audio/...ite.mp3

More information available at http://www.gaiananda.net/ We hope to see you there! :-)
