Mid-Eastern Dance Society of Kentuckiana presents:
KARIM NAGI
Tradition Re-Imagined
November 1 & 2 (Saturday and Sunday) 2008

Workshop details, directions, and registration forms are at www.MEDSOK.org. We hope our Cincinnati friends will join us!

KARIM NAGI is a native Egyptian who specializes in Arabic music and dance. He is a virtuosic, imaginative artist who is invited to teach and perform all over the world. His TURBO TABLA project has released two CDs which are distributed internationally by Universal Records. He is the founder and director of the annual (and annually sold-out) East Coast Arab Dance Seminar, and a former faculty member of the New England Conservatory of Music. His 2008 tours include the Ahlan Wa Sahlan festival; Simon Shaheen's Arabic Music Retreat; the Las Vegas Intensive; Mid-Eastern Music and Dance Camp in CA; Folk Tours Camp in PA; and workshops in Japan, Taiwan, Canada, and...Louisville KY!

Karim says: 'My teaching and performance transcend the distinctions. I regularly teach the Traditional, Old Guard and Cabaret schools, and I am also consistently invited to the major Tribal festivals. I am a native Egyptian, but am well acclimated to the American teaching style (highly verbal, and systematic with clear breakdowns, and I supply notes). I also teach at the university level. As a performer I have created pure tradition, as well as hybrid/fusion work. I think I am quite compatible with the broad range of dance styles in your community. But don't let all the credential-stuff color your opinion: my classes are fun and funny. '

Our weekend with Karim is designed to appeal to women & men, dancers & musicians. Karim is known for his intelligently humorous style that motivates students to an advanced level of movement and expression. Our new venue, the beautiful Clifton Center in the heart of the lively restaurant scene on Frankfort Ave, boasts a theatre with a large stage, balcony, sound, lights and dressing room. It will be a wonderful weekend. Read on!

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 1st: Five hours of instruction. $60 members, $80 all others. Vending by Donna Carleton and Nashwa.

10:00 -12:30 PM: TAHTEEB & ASSAYA (for men and women). Have more fun on stage! Dancing with sticks and canes is a quintessential expression in Egyptian village dance. Karim teaches a bold yet graceful unisex cane style that incorporates the male Tahteeb bravado & mock combat AND the Assaya flirtation and spunk. Karim teaches with the straight cane (any dowel between 3' and 4') and covers all the basic spins, flips and strikes, utilizing both hands for the entire lesson. Double cane is also taught, culminating in a short "friendly battle" choreography. Register by Oct 15 and we provide your (autographed) dowels!

2:00 - 4:30 PM: MUSICALITY FOR DANCERS (and musicians who play for dancers). This is a movement class that will help the dancer become the physical personification of Arabic music. Despite any mastery of technique and bodily dexterity, true dance expression requires musicality. Karim will demystify Arabic music by identifying and explaining several recurring themes, guiding students through several songs, and leading students in dancing to each theme. The class covers Taksim, Melodic themes, Vocal vs. instrumental songs, Rhythms & rhythm changes, Melodic modulation, Song structure, Orchestration & Instrumentation. Musicians will not need instruments for this class. They can consider it a lecture, so that they can learn what will make a dancer react, and how.

8:00 -10:00 PM: DANCE CONCERT by MEDSOK dancers and featuring Karim (’abdallah skywalker’) Nagi, who will be treating us to one of his vibrant and energetic solo performances combining both dance and drumming. $5 members, $10 all others.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 2nd: Three hours of instruction. $35 members, $40 all others.

10:00 AM -1:00 PM: SAGAT & ZILLS (Dancers and percussionists of all levels are welcome). Karim promises to transform dancers into musicians with his comprehensive zill method utilizing drum techniques and an ambidextrous approach. His method is distinctive & effective; dance luminary Laurel Victoria Gray (director of Silk Road in Washington DC) incorporated Karim's approach into her own curriculum, and Artemis repeatedly invites him back to teach at her Folk Tours Camp. Students will learn Arabic rhythms by name & how to play them while dancing. Dancers will learn to use zills to communicate rhythms to a band & to accent solo dances and body movements.

The Fine Print:
-~- Workshop details, directions, and registration forms are at www.MEDSOK.org.
-~- Doors open at 9 am on Saturday and Sunday. Vending on Saturday only. Some zills will be available for sale on Sunday.
-~- If you want to dance in the Concert, you must be a MEDSOK member and you must take the SATURDAY workshop. (You can apply for membership on the workshop registration form.)
-~- No flash cameras or obtrusive picture taking at concert. No videotaping without permission.
-~- Your dancing canes are FREE if your registration form is received by us by Wednesday, October 15.
-~- Concert tickets are free for performers, $5 for MEDSOK members, and $10 for all others, even if bought by a MEDSOK member.
-~- NO REFUNDS unless event(s) are canceled.
-~- For more information: MEDSOK.org, KarimNagi.com, and TurboTabla.com.

Thank you and Welcome!

Free vending at Sorgfest in Middletown Ohio, Saturday July 19th! Sorgfest is looking for merchandise vendors (sorry, no food or beverage vendors) - there is no charge for vending space, but you will need to call and reserve your spot as soon as possible. POC is Tom: 937-580-7695.

Sorgfest is a single-day event from noon-midnight and will feature live music, XVW Wrestling exhibitions, a playground and various other activities, including a Guitar Hero tournament in the evening.

Also, if you want to dance - let ME know and I'll get you in! Times available for performing are between noon and 2 p.m. other than that, we'd have to squeeze you in between bands (and if you have a band that wants a slot, get a hold of me and I'll see what I can do!) and I can't guarantee you'll perform on-time. Performing is pro-bono - the festival organizers are not charging admission nor are they charging vending fees - they are simply trying to bring some attention to the good things they're doing in downtown Middletown by throwing a huge party.

Music from "Rakshasa" has been used in films, commercials, and for various choreographies created by dance troupes from around the country.
show Le Serpent Rouge. She has been touring with Bellydance Superstars since
the fall of 2005 and can be seen performing on their new Tribal Fusions DVD.
Combining talents with David Satori and Tommy Cappel to create Tribal
Derivations last spring, Zoe discovered she enjoyed creating music, and a new cd will be out may of 2008. When not with the Indigo, she tours with The Yard Dogs Road Show,
Indian classical dance. Zoe was recently nominated for Zaghareets best
existence.
Her amazingly emotional and personal style has captivated audiences in the Bay Area and abroad. Elizabeth believes that the heart is the source of dance and that dance is an expression of our relationship with life and culture. A life-long dancer, Elizabeth formally began studying and performing Middle Eastern dance in 1996 at the age of 18.

About Valizan:
Valizan began his journey into Middle Eastern dance in 1995 when he joined The Society For Creative Anachronism, an educational group that learns about the Middle Ages by recreating it. Teachers Rayah Blackstar and Moria The Black instilled basic technique, while classes with the sublime Roula Said took him to a new plateau. Current influences include Yasmina Ramzy, Fat Chance Belly Dance, Jillina, Rachel Brice, Francisco Carranza and Aziz of Salt Lake City.

As one of few male belly dancers in North America, he has become a sought after solo performer and teacher across Canada and The U.S. for his powerful style and energy. He also heads up his own troupe, Shades Of Araby. Local appearances include Arabesque Dance Company's Asala, The International Belly Dance Conference Of Canada, Tribally Inspired, Northern Migration, The Dark Side, Face Zenna at the Royal Ontario Museum and The Bewitching Bellydance Ball. He also headlined In The Heat Of The Hafla in Milwaukee and appeared at Cabin Fever in Buffalo, NY.

He was recently honored to have been included in the 2007 Men Of Middle Eastern Dance Calendar put out by male belly dancer Jim Boz.

He began teaching American Tribal Style belly dance at Arabesque Academy in 2004, and became an apprentice in the Arabesque Dance Company in November 2005 when he began training in Egyptian Folklore with Yasmina Ramzy. He is honored to be a lead dancer in the Arabesque Dance Company Men's corps, and in the new project, The Righteous Rogues Of Raks.

Valizan also holds a degree from The Ryerson School Of Journalism.
Deniz’s Original Annual Charity event is BACK!
10th Annual Belly Boo Bash will be on Saturday, October 4th, 2008 in the Historic Oregon District.
Come one, come all for a great cause. Tickets are only $15, and all proceeds go to the charity. This year’s charity is the Lakota Indian Nation. Many are living in sub-standard housing, with no heat, running water or electricity. Many children don’t have a winter coat. The sad thing is that this is going on right here in America. So let’s do something to help out and come in your most ghoulish gear and be prepared to scare.
If you are interested in dancing in the event, please call Deniz at 937-602-3788. Spots are limited so call her quick! In addition to the workshop earlier that day, Valizan will be performing that night. The event will be held at the new PlayThink Learning location at 411 E Fifth Street in the middle of the Historic Oregon Distric. There will be plenty of parking now that the city of Dayton is sending 1.3 mil to create more places for people to park. Show starts at 8:pm and will be done when we’ve squeezed all the fun we can out of the night. Open dancing, yummy treats, raffle items, plus anything else we can think up to make the night an exceptional evening to remember.
Visit www.caravanworkshops.com to learn more.

Samovar Dance LLC presents:

Joe Williams RETURNS to teach the Delsarte System of Expression for Dancers!

Sun, June 8, 1:30 - 4:30 pm $35.00
Samovar Dance Studio at 300 Distillery Commons
Louisville 40206 (next to Headliners on Lexington Rd)

(Yes! We bring him back because we want to take a workshop from him again!)

What do Morocco of NYC (noted authority on Middle Eastern dance) and the Juillard School in NYC have in common? Both have Joe Williams on their faculty teaching the Delsarte system!

Delsarte gesture & movement principles add emotional depth to your technique & improvisation...improve communication with your audience...and identify movement patterns that are limiting the expressive use of your body. And Joe Williams is THE acknowledged expert on Delsarte!

This workshop will (re)introduce the basics of body language as revealed by Delsarte, describe straightforward but little-known techniques for communicating with your audience, and teach Delsarte exercises that establish the qualities of Beauty, Power and Presence in any dancer. This is a not-to-be-missed opportunity for Kentuckiana dancers of all disciplines and skill levels to come to grips with the challenge of dancing what they feel and feeling what they dance. If you are a dancer or a choreographer at any skill level you need to be here!

Joe got rave reviews from the attendees at the April workshop. This longer workshop will present new material as well as a refresher on the original stuff. It is hard to believe how informative this workshop is until you take it... and Joe has devised a structure which is lucidity itself. He doesn't leave students lost, bewildered or confused. There were dozens of a-ha! moments each hour. He truly is amazing.

$35 tuition includes admission to the Shake Your Tail Feathers party that will be held after the event. Joe will be vending a supplementary Practice Guide to students who wish to purchase one.

=========================================================================

"Joe Williams has single-handedly brought the wonderful principles and authentic teachings of real Delsarte back to life and to us. It's a necessary addition that improves any performing Art and Joe's clear, loving and gentle explanations make it so much easier for any student to grasp and employ for their betterment. He is simply inspiring." -- Morocco

Joe Williams has been successfully reviving interest in the Delsarte acting method with his workshops and seminars since 1997. Joe says: The Three Pillars approach teaches how body, mind, and spirit are not abstract principles but show themselves in every part of your body and every movement you make. Whether your style is Tribal, Fusion, Cabaret or Folkloric, you will see that all dance steps and gestures are various words from the alphabet of those three principals. Delsarte's principles of gesture are a powerful tool for developing body awareness for any number of ends.

The Delsarte method is the historically acknowledged source of the inspirations of Isadora Duncan, Ruth St. Dennis, and the entire Dennishawn School (including students Martha Graham and Doris Humphrey). Delsarte's work was praised by some of the greatest minds of the day, from scientists to religious scholars, musicians, and artists. Even renowned yogis mentioned it with the greatest respect. His system is a thorough examination of voice, breath, movement dynamics, line and form in their roles as expressive agents. Contemporary thought might recognize that he had uncovered the world of archetypes and universal symbolism. Unfortunately, the Delsarte system's popularity was its undoing in America. Within the span of twenty years it became a fad and then a frenzy, degenerated into a culture of studied posing, fell into disrepute, and disappeared... ...until Joe Williams decided to revive Delsarte's original system, that is. In the field of Delsarte for Middle Eastern Dance, he is now on the faculty of Morocco and the Casbah Dance Experience and has taught seminars and performed for BellyJam, Stars of the East, and Shakira in Columbus, Ohio. In 2005 he became a member of the faculty of the Dalcroze Institute at the Juilliard School in New York City, marking the first time in recent history that Delsarte has been taught as a valid and practical training method at a major school of fine arts.

Joe Williams, a resident of NYC, has been creating workshops and seminars on Delsarte since 1997. He is on the movement faculty for the Dalcroze Institute at Juilliard, and has been a guest teacher and Artist in Residence for Lori Belilove's Isadora Duncan Dance Foundation in New York. Williams has taught Master Classes for the Dance Department at Iowa State University, Wright State University, Ocean County Performing Arts Academy in NJ, Corporeal arts Inc. and at the Omaha Healing Arts Center. He has taken Delsarte to the Star Island Retreat Center for a week of dance, and used Delsarte to teach body language as a guest lecturer for communication classes at Mercy College, Bronx Community College and the School for Visual Art in Manhattan. An article in Mime Journal's 2005 special edition on Delsarte has brought him international recognition for his work in Delsarte and he has been consultant and teacher for the first scholarly thesis on the subject to be written in France, Francois Delsarte's homeland.

In the field of Middle Eastern Dance (MED) , he is on the faculty of Morocco and the Casbah Dance Experience, and has taught seminars and performed for Bellyjam, Stars of the East, Shakira in Columbus, Ohio, and special appearances with Su'ad and Farasha, in Connecticut, Vermont and New Jersey. Joe's work with Delsarte has been featured in articles in the MED publications WAMEDA (July-August 2000) and Zaghareet! (Sept - Oct 2000). His involvement in MED began in 1985 when Joe joined the Dayton Ethnic Dance Ensemble, which studied historically accurate Middle Eastern dance. In 1986 he began to work on the dance of the Whirling Dervish, which he has been performing consistently since 1994, most notably for the Institute of Ethnicity, Culture and the Modern Experience at Rutgers Universtity and the New School University Diversity Initiative in New York.

A teacher of dance, voice and yoga, Joe has a BA in organizational and interpersonal communications and a minor in theater from Wright State University, where he was the artistic director for the "Rolling Stock" theater group, helping to write and produce touring shows that presented the talents of differently-abled students. He was a scholarship student in ballet at the Dayton Ballet and Dayton Contemporary Dance schools (becoming assistant business manager of the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company for one year), and taught communication workshops for the Wright State School of Medicine for 6 years. His performing credentials include dinner theaters in the Midwest, where he danced and sang his way in numerous musicals including "George M", "Fiddler on the Roof," "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers," "Phantom," "Annie,"and several holiday reviews. He has also appeared as vocal soloist in oratorios with regional orchestras and with the Upper West Side Opera Association in Manhattan.

Mark your calendars!

Deniz did some soul searching, and checking to make sure there are no other local events happening that same weekend, she has decided to bring back her original Belly Boo fundraising event October 4th, 2008, along with our special guest , uber-super Valizan, teaching traditional FCBD ATS (beginning in the morning, advanced that afternoon). Sunday will be semi-private lessons in Tahtib - tell all your guys who love to dance!!! More details (location and registration) will be coming soon.

We missed her event last year since starting Belly Boo and Caravan of Hope back in the mid-90's. We're so glad she's back. ;-P I do know tickets to the show will be $15, and once all expenses are met (location rental, etc. - so any donations mean more $$ to the charity) all proceeds from Belly Boo will be going to the charity chosen. She is researching that right now, wanting the money to go to actual "good works" vs. administration (Anything over 10% administration starts getting shaky). Anyway - Suggestions welcome! As Ghandi said - "Be the change you wish to see."

Blessings,

Monday, April 16, 6:30 - 8:30 PM:
Samovar Dance LLC presents:

Joe Williams and the Delsarte System of Expression, tailored for Dancers!

What do Morocco (noted authority on Mid-Eastern dance) and the Juilliard School in NYC have in common? Both have Joe Williams on their faculty teaching Delsarte!

Delsarte gesture & movement principles will
...add emotional depth to your technique & improvisation,
...improve communication with your audience,
...identify the movement patterns that are limiting the expressive use of your body.

The workshop will be a hybrid of two of Joe’s most popular seminars for dancers. ‘Body Language and the Dance’ introduces the basics of body language as revealed by Delsarte. ‘Expressive Zones of the Body’ is filled with "A-Ha!" moments as students recognize how accurate and applicable these forgotten truths are. Learn how changing the height of a gesture by a few inches, or changing the finger which is used to initiate a touch, can powerfully alter the meaning of that gesture.

Dancers and choreographers of all genres, persuasions and skill levels will enjoy this seminar. $25 tuition includes refreshments and a meet-and-greet with Joe after the event. The most recent edition of Joe's Delsarte Practice Guide will be available for purchase at the workshop.

Ruric's short workshop on improvisation last December got enthusiastic feedback from the attendees, and significant portions of that workshop incorporated Delsarte principles. If improvisation is one of your passions (or on your to-do list) then skip the take-out pizza that night and come instead to this unique and effective workshop!

The seminar is at Ruric-Amari's dance studio at
300 Distillery Commons,
Louisville KY 40206
(next to Headliners on Lexington Road)
Easy access from all major interstates.

================================
Joe lives in New York City, and has been creating workshops and seminars on Delsarte since 1997. He is on the movement faculty for the Dalcroze Institute at Juilliard, and has been a guest teacher and Artist in Residence for Lori Belilove’s Isadora Duncan Dance Foundation in New York. A article in Mime Journal's 2005 special edition on Delsarte has brought him international recognition for his work in Delsarte and he has been consultant and teacher for the first scholarly thesis on the subject to be written in France, Francois Delsarte’s homeland.

In the field of Middle Eastern Dance (MED) , he is on the faculty of Morocco and the Casbah Dance Experience, and has taught seminars and performed for Bellyjam, Stars of the East, Shakira in Columbus, Ohio, and special appearances with Su’ad and Farasha, in Connecticut, Vermont and New Jersey. Joe’s work with Delsarte has been featured in articles in the MED publications "WAMEDA" (July-August 2000) and "Zaghareet!" (Sept - Oct 2000).

His performing credentials include dinner theaters in the Midwest, where he danced and sang his way in numerous musicals including "George M", "Fiddler on the Roof," "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers," "Phantom," "Annie," and several holiday reviews. He has also appeared as vocal soloist in oratorios with regional orchestras and with the Upper West Side Opera Association in Manhattan.
Tangled Web Productions will be sponsoring our first "Carnival of Evil" show this year, and we're looking for performers. This year's theme is toys... but NOT your everyday pleasant ones! We're talking possessed and creepy toys... the kind that make you want to keep one eye open at night! There's a limited number of performance slots for this one-of-a-kind event, which will allow us to pay the performers.

Tentative Name: Carnival of Evil 2008 - Draconia's Dreadful Playthings
When: Saturday, October 4, 2008
Time: Evening Performance (most likely starting at 8:00 PM and lasting 2.5 hours)
Additional Time Commitments: one mandatory informational meeting TBA (June or July) and one mandatory technical rehearsal TBA (could be earlier on the day of performance). Performers may also be required to participate in photo ops at the end of the performance.
It's not necessary to submit an audition tape or to audition in person. However, you do need to share your idea and provide as much detail as possible for what you want to do in this show. The script will be developed around the acts that are selected.

IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO BELLYDANCE FOR THIS SHOW! If you like spinning poi, hooping, juggling, etc. and your idea is creative (or disturbing) enough, then you just might find yourself in the "toy chest"! Please keep in mind that we are not able to accommodate fire performers for this year's venue.
A word about compensation... it is our goal to make sure that the performers receive some money for their efforts. However, it is too early in the planning process to state exactly how much that will be. Ticket sales will greatly impact how much money is given to the performers!

Feel free to share this email with others inside and outside our dance community... and mark your calendars for the Carnival of Evil on October 4th!

It's Jo Hadley w/ the Crescent Moon Dancers. Once again, the Crescent Moon Dancers are VERY proud to present Travis Fontaine Jarrell of Santa Fe, NM in a FABULOUS workshop on Sunday April 27th, 2008! Travis will utilize her extensive knowledge of many
different dance styles to show how fascinating gestures & movements from other cultures can be successfully incorporated into our own individual styles of Middle Eastern Dance. Whatever your style of dance is American Belly Dance, Raqs al Sharqi, Fusion, Interpretive, Gothic, Tribal, etc.), this workshop will have something for everyone! The cost is $40 before April 22, & $50 after April 22, & at the door. The fee includes the classes, our usual gourmet lunch, & the show! PLEASE don't order a show ticket for yourself, if you will be attending the workshop! We will be in a different location this year!!! We will be back at the Louisville School of Massage (where we were 4 years ago w/ Conchi & Nataj). As usual, everyone is welcome to dance in the informal show. Available slots will be filled on a first come-first served basis, so please let us know ASAP if you would like to perform! Our casual show is THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY for new dancers, new troupes, new choreographies, etc!!!

Karim Nagi, Mr. Turbo Tabla himself, is MEDSOK's 2008 workshop instructor. Karim Nagi's reputation as a master percussionist, dancer, teacher, performer and (as one U-Tube fan calls him ) 'party in a box' is growing fast. Karim has developed a comprehensive zill method that utilizes drum techniques and an ambidexterous approach and is a pioneer in the "Dancing Drummer" esthetic, combining choreographed movement with articulate drumming, done in unison. Laurel Victoria Gray (artistic director of Silk Road) updated her zill class technique in 2004 to reflect his system of developing ambidexterous skills . He teaches at Artemis's Folk Tour camp and he is a faculty member of the New England Conservatory of Music.

He says: 'I regularly teach the Traditional, Old Guard and Cabaret schools, and I am also consistently invited to the major Tribal festivals. I am a native Egyptian, but am well acclimated to the American teaching style (highly verbal, and systematic with clear breakdowns, and I supply notes). I also teach at the university level. As a performer I have created pure tradition as well as hybrid/fusion work. But don't let all the credential-stuff color your opinion. My classes are fun and funny. "

We haven't decided what dancing/music classes we'll ask him to do, but in case you want a preview:

Hi Folks,
We recently released a debut album. It's a mix of electronic and arabian styles. We're hoping it might appeal to the tribal and belly dance community, and also people that are into this sort of vibe and music. Please feel free to have a listen on myspace where we have four full tracks available to listen online.

http://www.myspace.com/nomadiqa

It would also be great to promote it through the network of tribal and/or belly dance teachers who might be interested to sell it at a class or bazaar. We can offer it at wholesale prices with plenty of capacity for the seller to make a decent profit on top of the wholesale price.

Please contact info@nomadiqa.com for further details. Sorry for the self promotion.

Hope to hear from you.
HABIBA
International teacher and performer of Ghawazi (Egyptian Gypsy) & Andalusian Dance

Workshop details, directions, maps and registration forms can be found on line at www.MEDSOK.org.

Join us on SATURDAY, Nov 10th for a day of ‘real’ tribal belly dance, Egyptian style! Habiba will teach the hypnotic, joyful dance style of Egypt’s ‘Invaders of the Heart’, the Ghawazi. The Ghawazi carried on the gypsy tradition of entertaining for hundreds of years, and, until the last of the famous practitioners retired, they were hired for all feasts and weddings in Lower Egypt. The dance form is relatively simple and repetitive, relying on interesting formations of two to five dancers and on the charm of each individual dancer. The Ghawazi are famous for their side-to-side shimmy movement, which is performed with effortless grace and power and which is layered into most of their signature combinations.

The five-hour workshop will teach fifteen steps ( horse stomps, shimmies, figure 8s, circles, travelling steps and hops), history and costumes, one group choreography, and one choreography that can be done solo or with a group. Bring your zills and Habiba will demonstrate how the ghawazi play them while dancing.

The workshop will be followed by an evening CONCERT with Habiba as the featured performer. Habiba will be joined by local and regional dancers and troupes in a 2-hour concert of the good, the great & the best!

Then join us again on SUNDAY, November 11th, for a 2.5 hour workshop on Andalucian dance, originally performed in the noble houses of medieval Andalusian Spain and throughout the Arab world. The dance emphasizes the elegant arm and hand movements of the court dancer and is performed with a graceful, floating elegance with just a hint of what would become flamenco hundreds of years later. This workshop will include technique, movements for the typical rhythms encountered in Andalusian music, a short choreography, history, costumes, and how to incorporate Andalusian dance into your belly dance routine.
