'Tradition Re-Imagined'

3 - MEMBER family: Spouse, parent, child or significant other may take the AM or the PM Saturday session for half-price.
4 - TEACHER: All teachers earn a discount of $10 per student if they register 3 or MORE students for the SATURDAY workshop. Teachers may apply their discount to their own or to student workshop fees.
KARIM SAYS: 'My teaching and performance transcend the distinctions. I regularly teach the Traditional, Old Guard and Cabaret schools, and I am also consistently invited to the major Tribal festivals. I am a native Egyptian, but am well acclimated to the American teaching style (highly verbal, and systematic with clear breakdowns, and I supply notes). I also teach at the university level. As a performer I have created pure tradition, as well as hybrid/fusion work. But don't let all the credential-stuff color your opinion: my classes are fun and funny. '
Our weekend with Karim is designed to appeal to women and men, dancers & musicians. And our new venue in the heart of the lively restaurant scene on Frankfort Ave boasts a theatre with a large stage, balcony, sound, lights and dressing room. It will be a wonderful weekend!
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 1st: Five hours of instruction. $60 members, $80 all others. Vending by Donna Carleton and Nashwa.
10:00 AM - 12:30 PM: TAHTEEB & ASSAYA (for men and women). Have more fun on stage! Dancing with sticks and canes is a quintessential expression in Egyptian village dance. Karim teaches a bold yet graceful unisex cane style that incorporates the male Tahteeb bravado & mock combat AND the Assaya flirtation and spunk. Karim teaches with the straight cane (we'll use dowels) and covers all the basic spins, flips and strikes, utilizing both hands for the entire lesson. Double cane is also taught, culminating in a short "friendly battle" choreography. Register by Oct 15 and we provide your (autographed) 'canes'!
2:00 - 4:30 PM: MUSICALITY FOR DANCERS (and musicians who play for dancers). This is a movement class that will help the dancer become the physical personification of Arabic music. Karim will demystify Arabic music by identifying and explaining several recurring themes, guiding students through several songs, and leading students in dancing to each theme. The class covers Taksim, Melodic themes, Vocal vs. instrumental songs, Rhythms & rhythm changes, Melodic modulation, Song structure, Orchestration & Instrumentation. Musicians will not need instruments for this class. They can consider it a lecture, so that they can learn what will make a dancer react, and how.
8:00 - 10:00 PM: DANCE CONCERT by MEDSOK dancers and featuring Karim Nagi, who will be treating us to one of his vibrant and energetic solo performances combining both dance and drumming. $5 members, $10 all others.
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 2nd: Three hours of instruction. $35 members, $40 all others.
10:00 AM -1:00 PM: SAGAT & ZILLS (Dancers and percussionists, all skill levels). Karim promises to transform dancers into musicians with his distinctive and effective zill method utilizing drum techniques and an ambidextrous approach. The class includes dance combinations, solo patterns, musicality, and when-and-when-not to play within an Arabic song. Dance luminary Laurel Victoria Gray incorporated Karim's approach into her own curriculum, and Artemis repeatedly invites him back to teach at her Folk Tours Camp. This class will enlighten amateurs and inspire professionals.

Feedback so far:
Thu, November 6, 2008 - 2:43 AMThis workshop was terrific!!
Probably the best zil class I've ever had the pleasure to have attended. there was plenty of information shared.
Karim is a great teacher, musician and including his subtle dancing.
I LOVED Saturday's workshop!!!! It was so much fun. Karim was both educational and entertaining!
I got something out of every apect of the weekend. As a musician, first and dancer second, I found the Musicality and the Sagat portions more to my benefit and the most fun as well.
I found Karim to be a great teacher with a good sense of humor.
Very good instructor -- I learned a lot.
His performance was very cute, also. LOVED the drum solo with Nashwa. That pretty much made my night.
I think what I liked best about this workshop and the instructor was that because he is a musician he makes you really THINK about the music. And you start thinking about it in a different way and actually HEARING it a different way. That to me is incredibly exciting, and opens up a lot of music to me personally, that I didn't really think about dancing to before.
I bought his CDs, and while I used to think dancing to techno music was so hard, now I'm starting to see what to accent, when to pause... that kind of thing. Like I said, very exciting.
Musicality workshop: You really do learn to HEAR the music differently. That was very cool.
The Zills workshop: Very enjoyable. I felt like I've learned to listen to the music in a different way.
Evening concert: VERY enjoyable. Loved it.
I was very pleased with the weekend, and my students seemed thrilled by the whole thing. I had a GREAT time, and I loved the show, so I consider the weekend a huge success.
Teacher -- exceptional, knowledgeable, engaging, kind.
Workshops -- Saturday -- both excellent
I really enjoyed the zills class that I attended with my teacher. Karim was a great teacher and as a student I still felt comfortable learning along with the more proficient dancers. I think you put on a great event!
The workshop was great, Karim was fantastic - very clear communication with the right balance of challenge and encouragement, and charming as a teacher, performer and gentleman.
I learned so much, really feel that I grew as a dancer, and would recommend him to all dancers of any experience level.
I'm not exaggerating when I say that was the best MEDSOK concert I have ever attended.
